I had some time and I thought I would get a midweek movie in I chose GI Joe Origins Snake Eyes and I have to say this was a decent choice for a midweek action film. Let’s get the first comparison out of the bag and let me tell you that this independent story from the GI movie series is a lot better than the movie that came out in 2013 with Dwayne Johnson and Channing Tatum. G.I. Joe: Retaliation.
Snake Eyes had a proper storyline and very early on you understand what kinda movie this is going to be once you understand the premise of the movie and what Henry Golding’s character Snake Eyes is after then you just strap into your motorbike and hold on for the ride of your life.

It was actually quite a simple plot childhood snake eyes sees his father get murdered by some bad guys and spends the rest of his life trying to find his dad’s killer and get revenge which takes him down the snake pit and you have some scenes that are 100% CGI but you still have a chance of a jump scare.

There are literal CGI Snakes in this movie that make the snakes you see in the Harry Potter movies like the plastic snakes you would get as children’s toys you move the end of the snake and it pretends to move like an actual snake. The whole snake pit looks real although looks like something like a manhole you go down and then when you go down to the snake pit it looks like something from The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movies from the 90s.

There were two types of action fight scenes in the movie one I did not really care for as it was gun action and this really had nothing going for it it was your typical gun action. The martial arts scenes though were a lot better and gave the movie more creditability. Hand-to-hand combat was good and the swordplay was above average as well. It gave me nostalgic feelings of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon at some point.

The one aspect of the movie that was a tad off was the motorbike sound effect it did not have that rumble they gave it more of a futuristic sound kinda like the Tesla of two wheels could you not go back in post-production and give the bike a decent rumble sound effect.

The movie was directed by the same director that brought you The Divergent series, Red, RIPD and The Time Travelers Wife Robert Schwentke decent movie that stand on its own and Snake Eyes as mentioned although part of the GI Joe series is a movie that you can watch independently without having to watch the below par JI Joe movies that came out in 2009 and 2013, my opinion skip them and watch this one if you want a decent storyline that you can invest in.

The cast was decent although the difference in accents from Henry Golding’s accent to the Japanese accents that the other actors had was kinda off-putting maybe Henry should have put an accent on.
The cast was great everyone played their roles perfectly and the movie flowed quite well a movie like this at its length always worries me because it was over two hours long and I was like I hope this picks up momentum fast and we can get a big chunk of the movie done quick and this movie kept its promise it’s over two hours long but you blink and this turns into a movie less than 90mins.

Before I end my review there is one more little easter egg in the movie and I did not realize until I looked up IMDB as part of my movie review research. Any WWE fans out there look out for a Streetfighter in the movie called Bruiser he is played by Mojo Rawlings an interesting tidbit.
I enjoyed the movie and I would say a movie that would be worth being part of your GI Joe movie collection.
A movie that you could watch with the kids and have parental guidance with it.
